It’s a new year and great things are happening
2025 is here! Maybe the world seems like it’s in a bit of chaos, but things are chugging along like they should be on the farm. The tulips went in right around Thanksgiving, and last month I started getting ranunculus soaked and ready for planting.
Archie was a big help … once he found out the bulbs weren’t toys
The ranunculus have proven to be a pretty big project. It wasn’t until AFTER I made my order that I started doing the math and realized I didn’t have room for all the plants I ordered. So, I’m in the middle of building, filling, and planting out two 40-foot ranunculus beds. I don’t know what I was thinking a 40-foot bed would look like, but my mental image was a lot smaller than reality. I’ve only got one built so far, and it seems enormous. Thankfully, I’ve been starting the ranunculus corms in successions, so I don’t have to have it all done at once: it is A LOT of work! Unfortunately for me (and maybe fortunately for my health and fitness), my pile of compost is down hill from the beds, so there has been a lot of pushing full wheel barrow loads up the hill. Fun.
The first bed
But it’s finally happening! The first succession of ranunculus babies are in the ground. The next batch are sprouting in trays, and this week I’m soaking and starting the final round. These plants require a lot of effort, but they’re so beautiful - it’s definitely worth it!
